Background and Work
Ahmed al-Doush is a British national who worked as a senior business analyst at Bank of America. He maintained family ties to Saudi Arabia and travelled there with his wife and children in August 2024.
The Arrest
Saudi authorities arrested Ahmed al-Doush on 31 August 2024 at the airport in Riyadh. He was preparing to return to the United Kingdom with his family when security detained him. The arrest was based on social media activity.
Legal Proceedings
The Specialized Criminal Court, a tribunal that Saudi Arabia uses to prosecute terrorism cases but that has become a key instrument for suppressing peaceful dissent, tried Ahmed al-Doush for charges related to his social media use. The charges violate his right to freedom of expression under international human rights law.
On 12 May 2025, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced him to ten years in prison. He appealed the conviction. In June 2025, an appeals court reduced the sentence to eight years. In April 2026, the sentence was further reduced to five years. He remains imprisoned.
The trial did not meet fair trial standards. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention reviewed the case and concluded in 2026 that his detention is arbitrary under international law. The Working Group called for his immediate release.
Detention Conditions and Health
Ahmed al-Doush's mental well-being has deteriorated significantly during his imprisonment. He remains separated from his wife and children, who witnessed his arrest at the airport.
International Response
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued an opinion finding his detention arbitrary and calling for his release. The United Kingdom government has been urged to intervene on behalf of its national.
