In July 2025, Ayman Al-Otoum was detained on charges of "insulting the religious beliefs and feelings of some segments in society" and subsequently released on bail. Late on a Friday night in January 2026, Jordanian authorities arrested the novelist and academic Ayman Al-Otoum while he was returning from Amman to Irbid Governorate, under the 2023 Cybercrime Law. The arrest came only days after the release of his son, who had been detained along with a group of students for expressing political views.
